The spadix is ​​cylindrical and densely bears bisexual flowers that are yellow at first, 3-5 cm long, and gradually grow larger, turning yellow-green. A large white spathe is attached to the base of the flower stalk, surrounding the stalk and inflorescence. The berries are embedded in the rachis and ripen green. It grows in colonies in marshes in cold regions, and is distributed in Honshu, Hokkaido, the Kuril Islands, Kamchatka, Sakhalin, and Ussuri. The name comes from the fact that it grows near water and its leaves resemble those of a banana. In North America there is the American skunk cabbage, L. americanus Hult. et St.John, which has a yellow spathe.
