A city in southern Gifu Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies gentle hills in the Mino-Mikawa Plateau. Okute and Hiyoshi were post towns on the old Nakasendo road. Blessed with china clay, the city center has developed a ceramics industry producing Mino ware tea bowls, plates, and other items, and together with Tajimi and Toki, it forms the Tono pottery region. Ceramics accounted for approximately 34% (2003) of the city's manufactured goods shipments. The city is served by the Chuo Main Line, the Chuo Expressway, and National Route 19. The area around the Kiso River on the northern border is part of the Hida-Kisogawa Quasi-National Park. Area: 174.86 km2 . Population: 40,387 (2010). 岐阜県南部の市。1954年市制。美濃三河高原中のなだらかな丘陵地を占める。大湫(おおくて),日吉は旧中山道の宿場であった。陶土に恵まれ,中心市街では美濃焼の茶碗,皿などの陶磁器工業が発達,多治見・土岐両市とともに東濃陶業地をなす。市の製造品出荷額では窯業が約34%(2003)を占める。中央本線,中央自動車道,国道19号線が通じる。北境の木曾川一帯は飛騨木曾川国定公園に属する。174.86km2。4万387人(2010)。
