A volcanic island located southeast of the Tuamotu Islands in the South Pacific Ocean and under British rule. The British ship Carteret arrived there in 1767. It was uninhabited for a long time, but it is known that the crew of the British ship Bounty who mutinied there settled there with Tahitians in 1790. The current inhabitants are their descendants.
