A marine fish belonging to the order Perciformes and family Cotidae. It is found throughout Japan south of southern Hokkaido and in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. Although it has the name "goby," it is actually a species of the family Cotidae. It has a flat skin flap above the eye, but no flap on the back of the head. It has a small preopercular spine. It has almost no scales on its body. There are no skin flaps on the lateral line. Its body color varies from blackish brown to yellowish brown, but it has no white spots on the ventral side. It lives in shallow sea seaweed beds and rocky areas. It is carnivorous and feeds on small crustaceans. Males have large reproductive projections. It grows to about 18 centimeters in length. The closely related species, the Asahiana goby, has white spots on the ventral side and small skin flaps on the lateral line. The Ayaana goby has a complex brown band running diagonally down its anal fin. In addition to these species, there are several other species of sand goby in Japan.
