A folk tale that was popular during the Song and Yuan dynasties (960-1367) in China. The term "he Lang" or "he Langzi" originally referred to peddlers selling ladies' accessories and household goods, but the name also refers to the performing art derived from their sales cries. The melody is no longer known, but it can be seen in Yuan zaju and the Water Margin, where the peddlers would wander the streets carrying a pole on their shoulders and a drum in their hands. One genre of court painting from the Song and Ming dynasties is the "he Lang Tu," which depicts peddlers in action. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
