A photographic term. Translated into Japanese as "pictorialism." Refers to a style of photography that follows established pictorial themes (landscapes, still lifes, portraits, etc.) and methods (composition, etc.) modeled on painting art. It was particularly popular in the UK from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, but gradually it gained a global influence, and in Japan from the Meiji to Taisho periods, this type of "artistic" photography occupied a central position in photographic expression. In Japan, a distinctive feature of the early period was the strong influence of ink painting and haiku painting. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
