...From the Sengoku period to the early modern period, peasants were often conscripted and mobilized for military and construction work, and it was important for feudal lords to confirm in advance the ability of peasants to pay the labor. When the Taiko Land Survey and subsequent early modern land surveys established a nationwide survey of land productivity based on a unified standard as the rice yield system, they simultaneously designated vassals capable of paying the labor, in the form of allowing the possession of specific houses, and determined this through the "household number of people and horses examination" separately from the land survey (household number of people and horses examination). In the Edo period, in the case of the Matsue Domain in Izumo and the Kokura Domain in Buzen, these specific houses were treated as being free of annual tax if they were 3 bu in size, and were called "official (me) yashiki," and the peasants who rented the houses were recorded as "official officials," "household people," "real farmers," etc. ...

…戦国期から近世初期のころには，農民を陣夫役，普請役等として徴用･動員することが多く，領主にとって夫役負担能力をあらかじめ確認しておくことは重要であった。太閤検地とこれに続く近世初期検地が，全国的に統一基準による土地生産力の調査を石高制として確立したとき，同時に特定の屋敷所持を認める形で，夫役の負担能力を有する役家を設定する場合や，検地とは別に〈家数人馬改〉によってそれを決定するなどのことが行われた(家数人馬改帳)。江戸時代，出雲松江藩や豊前小倉藩の場合，その特定屋敷は一律3畝歩が無年貢の扱いで，〈御役(目)屋敷〉と呼ばれ，その屋敷を請けた農民は〈公儀役人〉〈役家〉〈本百姓〉などと記されている。…
