Year of birth: Tempo 1.12.9 (1831.1.22)
A Chinese scholar and lawyer from the late Edo, Meiji and Taisho periods. His given name was Takeshi, and his pen name was Enshu, and he was commonly known as Teiichiro. His pen names included Nakasu, Kirinan, Eshou and Heikakurosen. He was born to a village chief in Nakajimamura, Bitchu (Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture). He studied under Yamada Hokoku and Saito Setsudo, learning about Cheng Zhu, Yangming and classical learning, and in his 20s he became devoted to current affairs policy. He entered Shoheiko Academy and was taught by Sato Issai and Asaka Gonsai. As a samurai of the Matsuyama domain of Bitchu, he taught at Yushukan, and served as the Shoheiko poetry and prose officer and the domain's military preparation officer. In the midst of the unrest in the western provinces, he once again turned his attention to the Yangming school of thought of his master, Hokoku. In the early Meiji period, he was reprimanded by the Imperial Court's pacification envoy for the domain's support of the shogunate, but he retired after resolving the situation. In 1872, he was conscripted by the new government to serve in the Ministry of Justice, where he served in various positions, including at the Tokyo Court, Shinchi Court, and as a specially appointed judge at the Supreme Court. In 1877, he founded the Nishogakusha school in Kojimachi. After lecturing at Tokyo Normal School, he became a professor of the Classics Department at the Faculty of Letters, University of Tokyo, and retired in 1884. He re-entered the legal profession (as a prosecutor and judge at the Supreme Court) and worked on revising the Civil Code. He was highly trusted by the Imperial Court, and served as a special adviser to the Crown Prince and an Imperial Court advisor. <Works> Nakasu Bunko, Nakasu Kowa, Kasumigaura Yumo <References> Disciple Collection, Chronology of Mishima Nakasu Sensei
