Minoshima

Japanese: 箕島 - みのしま

The central area of Arita City, northwest of Wakayama Prefecture. Former town name. In 1954 it merged with three neighboring villages to form Arita Town, and in 1956 it became part of Arita City. Located at the mouth of the Arida River, it has prospered as an estuary port since ancient times. As a distribution center for mandarin oranges, particularly those cultivated on the mountain slopes downstream, it was the location of the Kishu Domain's mouth office and the Mikankata shipping association, and was a place where cargo ships would stop. It is still the center of the Arita region, and is known for its production of mosquito coils.

和歌山県北西部，有田市の中心市街地。旧町名。 1954年近隣3村と合体して有田町となり，56年から有田市の一部。有田川河口に位置し，古くから河口港として繁栄。特に下流域の山地斜面で栽培されるミカンの集散地として，紀州藩の口前役所や，出荷組合である蜜柑方 (みかんかた) などがおかれ，廻船が寄港した。現在も有田地方の中心地で，蚊取線香の生産で知られる。
