The burning of books. In particular, the act or ritual of publicly burning books by rulers or those in power with the aim of suppressing the ideas contained in those books and preventing their circulation and spread. Since the First Emperor of Qin's burning of books and burying of scholars (213 BC), it is an extreme form of censorship and book banning, and a means of suppressing and controlling ideas and speech that has continued almost without interruption throughout history, as seen in the book burnings of Nazi Germany (1933) and the book burnings of China's Cultural Revolution (1966). In an age when books are mass-produced cheaply, it is impossible to burn everything, but it is carried out with symbolic meaning of suppression and control.
