A perennial plant of the family Eucalyptaceae. It is widely distributed throughout Japan, Asia, Europe, and North Africa. It grows in shallow water such as ponds, swamps, and ditches. The stem is erect, 50-100 cm tall, and somewhat soft and hairless. The leaves are longer than the stem, rise above the water surface, linear, blunt, and have a ridge on the underside. From June to August, branches emerge from the upper leaf axils, and the branches with flower spikes have enveloping leaves. The flowers are unisexual, producing spherical heads. The numerous male inflorescences are white and grow at the top of the branches. The female inflorescences are about five in number, green, and grow at the bottom of the branches. When ripe, they become green, spherical aggregate fruits with many projections. The drupes have ridges and are pointed at the tip.
