A general term for invertebrates belonging to the phylum Nematomorpha. This name comes from the fact that their bodies are long and slender like wires, and that the cuticle on their surface is quite hard. They live freely in freshwater. Their body length is usually 10-40cm, but some can reach up to 1m, and their body color varies from white, yellow, to dark brown. The front end of their body is round with an opening in the middle, and the rear end is round and branches into 2-3 lobes. Their digestive tract runs vertically along the ventral side of their body, but as they reach adulthood and mature, parts of the tube degenerate and close, making it impossible for them to take in food.
