Institute for Languages ​​and Cultures of Asia and Africa

A national research institute established in 1964 (Showa 39) based on a recommendation by the Science Council of Japan. Its objectives are to conduct comprehensive research on the languages ​​and cultures of Asia and Africa, as well as to compile dictionaries and provide education and training on the languages ​​of these regions. Although it is technically an institute attached to the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, it is also a joint-use institute available to specialized researchers from universities and other research institutes throughout Japan. It was the first joint-use institute in Japan for the humanities and social sciences attached to a national university, and as of 2008 it is comprised mainly of five project research departments, the Information Resources Utilization Center, and the Field Science Research Planning Center. It is located at 3-11-1 Asahi-cho, Fuchu-shi, Tokyo.

日本学術会議の勧告に基づいて1964年(昭和39)に設立された国立の研究機関。アジア、アフリカの言語文化に関する総合研究、ならびにこれらの地域の言語に関する辞典編製および教育訓練を目的とする。制度上、東京外国語大学付置の研究所であるが、同時に、全国の大学、その他の研究機関の専門研究者の利用に供する共同利用研究所である。人文・社会科学系の国立大学付置共同利用研究所として日本最初のもので、2008年現在、5つのプロジェクト研究部、情報資源利用センター、フィールドサイエンス研究企画センターを中心に編成されている。所在地は東京都府中市朝日町3-11-1。
