Karakoromo Kisshu

Karakoromo Kisshu

A kyoka poet of the late Edo period. His real name was Kojima Kyoju, he was commonly known as Gennosuke, and his other name was Suichikuen. He was a shogunate official. He lived in Yotsuya Shinobuhara Yokocho, Edo (Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo) and studied at the residence of Uchiyama Yoshi, but he also enjoyed kyoka. In 1769 (Meiwa 6), he invited fellow students Yomono Akara (Shokusanjin) and Heiji Tosaku to hold a kyoka gathering at his home, which became the origin of Edo kyoka. The trend spread, and Moto's Mokuami and Akera Kanko joined in. During the several years from 1783 (Tenmei 3), the so-called Tenmei Kyoka was at its peak, Akara's witty and bold style was popular with Edo citizens and dominated the mainstream. In contrast, Tachibana's neat and simple style was not suitable for the masses, and his Kyoka Wakabashu collection was unpopular, so he seemed to be left behind. However, orthodox Kyoka was highly praised during the Kansei Reforms (1787-1793) after Tanuma Okitsugu's downfall, and he played a central role in his later years. He died on July 18, 1712, at his house in Tansu-cho, Koishikawa. He is buried in the Jodo-ji Cemetery (Togoshi, Shinagawa, Tokyo).
