This old town occupies the northwestern part of Fukue Island in the Goto Islands, Minami Matsuura District, Nagasaki Prefecture. It has been a base for maritime traffic since ancient times, and Japanese envoys to the Tang Dynasty sailed here. In the Middle Ages it came under the control of the Uku clan, and in the Edo period the Goto Domain had a horse ranch here, and whaling was also practiced here. The main settlement, Hamanokuri-go, was once a base for fixed-net fishing of yellowtail. The hilly plateau made of basalt produces sweet potatoes and wheat through field irrigation. Calves and pigs are also raised. Fishing is practiced using foot-hook nets, single-line fishing, and gill nets. In August 2004 it merged with Fukue City, Minami Matsuura District's Tomie Town, Tamanoura Town, Kishuku Town, and Naru Town to form Goto City. 33.77 km2 . 3,911 people (2003).
