1886‐1978 Swedish physicist. He studied at Lund University, where he later served as assistant to J.R. Rydberg. In 1920 he became a professor at Lund University, and in 1923 he became a professor of physics at Uppsala University. In 1937 he became director of the Nobel Institute of Physics at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and a professor of physics at Stockholm University. He conducted research into X-ray spectroscopy, precisely measuring the characteristic X-rays of various elements and providing an experimental basis for elucidating atomic structure. For this work he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1924. His other achievements include inventing the vacuum spectroscope and measuring the lattice constants of crystals, and he also served as a member of the International Committee for Weights and Measures.
