A general term for insects of the Agrias genus in the Nymphalidae family. A group of medium- to large-sized Nymphalid butterflies native to Central and South America, the representative species A. sardanapalus is so named because males are usually beautifully colored in red, navy blue, and black-brown. The undersides of the wings tend to be black, and the hind wings have eye-like patterns. Widely distributed from Mexico southward, especially in the tropical rainforests of the Amazon, all species have thick, sturdy bodies and strong wings, and fly majestically. Small males can span a wingspan of 6 cm, while large females can span a wingspan of 8 cm. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
