Jorge Manrique

Spanish poet. A distinguished soldier whose father was the commander of the Knights of Santiago. He died heroically fighting for the Catholic Queen Isabella I during the civil war for the throne. He holds a firm place in the history of literature for his single poem, Coplas por la muerte de su padre (Ode to the Death of the Father), consisting of almost 40 stanzas, which sings of the death of his father, Don Rodrigo. This poem is a masterpiece of elegy in world literature, and is praised alongside Milton's Lycidas and Tennyson's In Memoriam.

スペインの詩人。サンチアゴ騎士団長を父にもつ名門の軍人。王位継承の内乱においてカトリック女王のイサベル1世のために戦い，英雄的な死を遂げた。父ドン･ロドリゴの死を歌った，ほぼ40連から成るただ1編の詩《父の死に寄せる歌Coplas por la muerte de su padre》(1476)で文学史上確固たる地位を占めているが，この詩は現世的なもののはかなさ，永遠の生の希求という古典的テーマに抒情的で完璧な表現を与えた絶唱で，世界文学における悲歌の傑作として，ミルトンの《リシダス》やテニソンの《イン･メモリアム》と並び称されている。
