1440‐79 Spanish poet. A distinguished soldier whose father was the commander of the Knights of Santiago. He died heroically fighting for the Catholic Queen Isabella I during the civil war for the throne. He holds a firm place in the history of literature for his single poem, Coplas por la muerte de su padre (Ode to the Death of the Father), consisting of almost 40 stanzas, which sings of the death of his father, Don Rodrigo. This poem is a masterpiece of elegy in world literature, and is praised alongside Milton's Lycidas and Tennyson's In Memoriam. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
