Uchiyama Pass

A pass on National Route 254 on the border between Shimonita Town, Kanra County, Gunma Prefecture, and Saku City, Nagano Prefecture. It is located south of Kumakura Mine (1,234 meters). The current pass is 1,066 meters above sea level and was opened as a road in 1940 (Showa 15). During the Edo period, it was used to transport rice and sake from Saku, and bamboo crafts and konjac from Shimonita. In 1978 (Showa 53), the Uchiyama Tunnel was completed below the pass. The area around the pass became a region of ranches and villas, and from here you can also access Karuizawa via the Myogi Arafune Super Forest Road. The view from the pass is excellent, with the Yatsugatake mountain range visible from Mt. Arafune in front of you, and the Renge Tsutsuji flowers that bloom in late June are also magnificent. It is the entrance to the Mt. Arafune hiking trail and is part of the Myogi-Arafune-Saku Kogen Quasi-National Park.

群馬県甘楽(かんら)郡下仁田町(しもにたまち)と、長野県佐久市(さくし)との境にある国道254号上の峠。熊倉峰(くまくらみね)（1234メートル）の南にある。現在の峠は標高1066メートルで、1940年（昭和15）に車道として開削されたものであるが、江戸時代、佐久の米や酒と下仁田側の竹細工、こんにゃくなどの物資輸送の峠であった。1978年（昭和53）峠下に内山トンネルが完成。峠一帯は牧場や別荘地帯になり、ここから妙義荒船スーパー林道経由で軽井沢(かるいざわ)にも通ずる。峠からの眺めが優れ、眼前の荒船(あらふね)山から八ヶ岳(やつがたけ)連峰などが見え、6月下旬に咲くレンゲツツジもみごとである。荒船山登山コースの入口となっている。妙義荒船佐久高原国定公園に含まれる。
