Gudou Uchiyama
Year of death: January 24, 1911 (Meiji 44)
Year of birth: May 17, 1874 (Meiji 7)
A Buddhist and social thinker of the Meiji period. Born in Ojiya Town (Ojiya City), Niigata Prefecture, as the eldest son of Naokichi and Kazu, craftsmen who made wooden confectionery molds. His childhood name was Keikichi. In 1897, he was ordained at Hozoji Temple in Kanagawa Prefecture and changed his name to Gudo. After studying at the 12th Soto Zen middle school, he became the head priest of Rinsenji Temple in Ohiradai, Hakone in 1904. Gudo declared himself a socialist in the weekly Heimin Shimbun (January 17, 1904 issue), based on the idea that Buddhist egalitarianism and socialism are in agreement. In the wake of the Akahata Incident in 1906, he secretly published pamphlets that rejected the Emperor System, such as "Prison Memorial: Anarchic Communism." He was implicated in the High Treason Incident in 1908, and was charged with high treason for making reckless remarks in Osaka and Kobe, such as that the Emperor would be so shocked that he would die if the Crown Prince was assassinated, and he was executed. <References> Ryuho Kashiwagi, "The High Treason Incident and Uchiyama Gudō"; Eizaburo Morinaga, "Uchiyama Gudō"
