The overall appearance of vegetation. The main plants that make up the majority of vegetation are called dominant species, and physiognomy is often determined by the life form of the dominant species. It was proposed by the German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt in the early 19th century. Places with similar environments, such as temperature and precipitation, have similar physiognomy. For example, forests form in places with a lot of precipitation, grasslands in places with little precipitation, and barrens form in places with even less precipitation.

植生全体の外観。植生のなかで多数を占める主要な植物は優占種と呼ばれ，相観は優占種の生活形で決まることが多い。19世紀初め，ドイツの博物学者アレクサンダー・フォン・フンボルトによって提唱された。気温や降水量といった環境が似た場所には，同じような相観が見られる。たとえば，降水量が多い場所には森林が，降水量が少ない場所には草原が，降水量がさらに少ない場所には荒原が形成される。
