Plain tiger (English spelling)

A butterfly belonging to the order Lepidoptera, family Danaidae. It is widely distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and Asia, and is common in Taiwan and the southern Ryukyu Islands. It is also found on Okinawa Island, the Amami Islands, the Tokara Islands, Yakushima, and Tanegashima, but these are likely temporary outbreaks caused by vagrants. The ones found in areas north of Kyushu are vagrants or temporary outbreaks derived from vagrants. Wing span is about 70 mm. The base color of the wings is orange, and the tips of the forewings are black with a white stripe running across them. It occurs all year round in tropical and subtropical regions, and all stages from egg to adult have been found on Amami Oshima from December to February of the following year, so it is thought that it does not have a specific hibernation form. The larvae's food plants are plants of the Asclepiadaceae family, such as milkweed, balloonweed, and mulberry.

A similar species is the Salatura genutia , which is common in the Ryukyu Islands south of the main island of Okinawa. Those found in areas further north are presumed to be vagrants or temporary outbreaks of vagrants. It resembles the Salatura genutia, but can be distinguished at a glance by the black veins of its wings. The food plant for its larvae is the Ryukyu oak, a member of the Asclepiadaceae family.

昆虫綱鱗翅(りんし)目マダラチョウ科に属するチョウ。アフリカおよびアジアの熱帯から亜熱帯に広く分布するチョウで、台湾、琉球(りゅうきゅう)諸島南部には普通。沖縄本島、奄美(あまみ)諸島から吐噶喇(とから)列島、屋久島(やくしま)、種子島(たねがしま)でも発生が認められるが、これらは迷チョウによる一時的発生の可能性が強い。九州以北の地域で発見されるものは迷チョウあるいは迷チョウに由来する一時的な発生である。はねの開張70ミリメートル内外。はねの地色は橙(だいだい)色、前ばねの先端部は黒色でそれを横切る白帯がある。熱帯から亜熱帯地方では年中発生し、奄美大島でも12月から翌年2月の冬季に卵から成虫に至るすべてのステージ（段階）が発見されており、特定の越冬態をもたないものと思われる。幼虫の食草はトウワタ、フウセントウワタ、ヒゴビャクゼンなどのガガイモ科植物である。

　近似種にスジグロカバマダラSalatura genutiaがあり、沖縄本島以南の琉球諸島に普通。それ以北の地域で発見されるものは迷チョウまたは迷チョウによる一時的発生と推定される。カバマダラに似るが、はねの脈が黒色を呈するので一見して区別される。幼虫の食草はガガイモ科のリュウキュウガシワである。
