Japanese: 万句合興行 - まんくあわせこうぎょう

One of the forms of performance of zahai. In the Edo period, it was called "manku yose" and many poems were collected and a competition was held to get points. As haiku performances became commercialized, the organizers of the performances were transferred from the judges to the kaisho (intermediary, kairin), who distributed flyers listing the theme, deadline, and entry fee, collected poems, received the judges' evaluations, exhibited the winning poems, and in many cases printed the highly-scoring poems and gave them prizes, returning the highly-scoring poems to small regional intermediaries. This was the general form of management, and the Tsuki Namihattsu Ku-awase of the late Edo period was also similar. In the case of senryu, this single-printed highly-scoring print is called "manku-awase" for short, but the term actually refers to the performance as a whole.

雑俳の興行形態の一つ。江戸では古く，〈万句寄（よせ）〉と呼ばれ，多くの句を集めて点取競争が行われた。俳諧興行が企業化し，興行主催が点者から会所(取次，会林)の手に移り，会所が題や締切日，入花料を記したちらしを配り，句を集めて点者の評を受け，入選句を披露し，多くの場合，高点句を印刷し，景品を添え，加点の詠草を地方の小取次へ返すのが一般的運営形態で，幕末の月並発句合もこれに準じたものである。川柳の場合，この一枚摺りの高点摺り物を〈万句合〉と略称しているが，本来は興行全体をさす言葉である。
