Novelist. Real name: Tamezo. Born in Akita Prefecture. He started out by writing satirical novels, then moved on to Kenyusha-style novels, but he attracted attention by publishing works incorporating Zola's method of emphasizing heredity and environment, such as "Hatsu Sugata" in 1900 (Meiji 33) and "Hayari Uta" the year after, and became a representative writer of early naturalism. He later published "Kobushi" (1906-08), "Chojaboshi" (1908-09), and "Yoritomo of Izu" (1911-12), which deepened his Zolaism, but the public's reputation was higher for his popular novel "Makaze Koikaze" (1903), so he gradually began to write popular works such as "Ginteki" (1914). From around 1932 (Showa 7), he fell into a state of silence due to frequent illness, but after the Second World War he took up his pen again and published works such as "Kudan Soushi" (1947). In 1948 (Showa 23), he became a member of the Japan Art Academy.
