Readings of the Nihon Shoki were held at the Imperial Court in the early Heian period. Readings of the Shoki have been held since Yoro 5 (721), but in the Heian period, they were held in Kōnin 3 (812), Jowa 6 (839), Gangyō 2 (878), Enki 4 (904), Johei 6 (936), Kōhō 2 (965), and other years. Doctors were selected by imperial decree to hold the readings, and the readings were held in the presence of ministers and other officials. After the readings, a banquet was held, where waka poems were composed on themes such as people who appear in the Shoki. This is called Nihon Shoki Kyoen Waka.
