Japanese: サンタ･クロース（英語表記）Santa Claus

Also spelled Santa Klaus. The name comes from Nicholas, a 4th century bishop of Myra in Asia Minor, and is a mispronounced English version of the Dutch word Sint Klaes or Sinterklaas, meaning Saint Nicholas. Nicholas's feast day (Saint Nicholas Day) is December 6th, and in Europe, especially Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, the night before is a day of gift-giving that children look forward to. As the sun sets, a man dressed as Bishop Nicholas appears accompanied by his servant Ruprecht (Knecht Ruprecht), where the whole family, especially the children, are waiting.

Santa Klausとも書く。4世紀に小アジアのミュラの司教であったニコラウスに由来し，聖ニコラウスを意味するオランダ語のSint KlaesまたはSinterklaasが英語でなまってサンタ･クロース(正しくはサンタ･クローズ)となった。ニコラウスの祝日(聖ニコラウスの日)は12月6日で，ヨーロッパ，とくにドイツ，スイス，オランダではその前夜は子どもが楽しみにする贈物の日である。日が暮れると，子どもを中心に家族一同が待つところへ，司教ニコラウスに扮した者が下僕ルプレヒトKnecht Ruprechtを従えて現れる。
