Arrow money - Yasen

Japanese: 矢銭 - やせん
Arrow money - Yasen

Military expenses imposed temporarily by feudal lords and warlords during the Sengoku period. According to an entry for August 1546 (Tenbun 15) in the Gensuke Ounenki, a diary by the monk Gonjo (also known as Genjo) of Rishoin Temple in Daigoji Temple in Kyoto, Miyoshi Magojiro imposed an arrow levy on each of the seven villages of Tahara in Yamashiro Province when he punished them in May of that year. It is also well known that Oda Nobunaga, who accompanied Ashikaga Yoshiaki to Kyoto in September 1568 (Eiroku 11), imposed an arrow levy of 20,000 kan in Sakai and 5,000 kan in Honganji in the following month in the provinces of Settsu and Izumi. In addition to the fact that arrow fees were levied per building (per household), they were also levied per rank (per land area).
