A god or holy person who visits occasionally. Customs surrounding the visits of the marebito can be found in ancient Japanese tales and modern folklore. Ancient people believed that the marebito were gods who visited at certain seasons, and that they appeared disguised in straw raincoats and hats to bring happiness to the world. The Namahage of Akita, which are passed down to the present day, also convey vestiges of the marebito faith.
