Japanese: ウミニナ(海蜷) - ウミニナ(英語表記)Batillaria multiformis
Batillaria multiformis - Batillaria multiformis
A slender snail shell of the family Halymidae (illustration) that is commonly found on gravel bottoms. The shell is about 3 cm long and 1.3 cm wide, with a high cone shape and about 8 stories. The surface has a row of black spots that resemble a cobblestone. The upper part of the coil has vertical ribs. The shell opening is semicircular, with a rounded curve on the outside and a black inside with white spots around the edges. The upper and lower parts of the coil become thicker and whiter. The operculum is circular and light brown. It is found from Honshu to Taiwan, and is often found on the gravel bottom of the intertidal zone of inland bays. It becomes active when the tide goes out, but moves in the opposite direction to the sunlight.
