...Seurat's "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" (1886) is a monumental work of Neo-Impressionism. However, he was not satisfied with this and resonated with the symbolist aesthetics of Charles Henry (1859-1926), who tried to relate the direction of lines on the painting to emotions - for example, a line going up to the right gives the viewer a sense of pleasure - and tried to perfect Neo-Impressionism by incorporating this into his actual work, but he died young. Signac, who succeeded him, compiled a theoretical book, "From Eugène Delacroix to Neo-Impressionism," in 1899, but the movement itself was already over. ...
