Malmedy - Malmedy (English spelling)

Japanese: マルメディ - まるめでぃ(英語表記)Malmédy
Malmedy - Malmedy (English spelling)

A small industrial city in the Liège province in the eastern part of Belgium. Population 11,394 (2002). It was ceded by Germany in the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. It is part of the German Community, which was established in 1993 when Belgium transitioned to a federal system and has independent authority in the areas of culture and education, along with Eupen. Located in the beautiful valley of the River Walche that cuts through the Ardennes plateau, it is known for its paper and leather industries. It is also a tourist destination and has a popular carnival. It was a monastic territory until 1794. From 1815 to 1919 it was part of Prussia. During World War II, the old houses in the center were destroyed in a German air raid in 1944. On December 17 of the same year, the "Malmedy Massacre" occurred, in which German troops killed American prisoners of war.
