Markevich

Japanese:
Markevich
Conductor and composer from Ukraine. Born in Kiev (then part of Russia), he emigrated with his parents at the age of two and spent his childhood in Switzerland. After learning piano and composition almost entirely by himself, he went to Paris in 1925 and studied piano under Cortot and composition under Boulanger. At the request of Diaghilev, he composed "Piano Concerto" (1929), "Concerto Grosso" (1930), and "Paradise Lost" for voice and orchestra (1934-1935), among others. In 1930, he began conducting by conducting the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, and studied conducting under Scherchen from 1934 to 1935. He subsequently served as conductor of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de Lamoureux, and other orchestras, and demonstrated clear interpretations of a wide range of repertoire, from classical to contemporary works by Stravinsky and others. However, in spite of his talent, he was not blessed with many positions throughout his life. He acquired Italian citizenship during World War II, and French citizenship in 1982. He first visited Japan in 1960. →Domingo/Haskil
