In art, it means "not finished." It is different from infinito (endless, infinite) and incompiuto (unfinished). It is used in reference to the technique of leaving artworks in a deliberately "unfinished" state to achieve a unique artistic effect. It originated with Michelangelo, and his contemporaries called Michelangelo's "non finito" in reference to the spiritual effect of his works from the 1520s onwards (such as "Day" for the Medici Mausoleum at San Lorenzo and "Prisoners" for the Mausoleum of Julius II) being left in a rough, unfinished state rather than being perfectly finished.
