Non finito (English spelling) [Italian]

Japanese: ノン･フィニート（英語表記）non finito[イタリア]

In art, it means "not finished." It is different from infinito (endless, infinite) and incompiuto (unfinished). It is used in reference to the technique of leaving artworks in a deliberately "unfinished" state to achieve a unique artistic effect. It originated with Michelangelo, and his contemporaries called Michelangelo's "non finito" in reference to the spiritual effect of his works from the 1520s onwards (such as "Day" for the Medici Mausoleum at San Lorenzo and "Prisoners" for the Mausoleum of Julius II) being left in a rough, unfinished state rather than being perfectly finished.

美術用語で，〈終わっていない〉を意味する。infinito(終りのない，無限の)，incompiuto(未完成の)のいずれとも区別される。芸術作品に関して，意識的な〈未完〉の状態のままに置くことによって，独自の芸術的効果をあげる技法について用いられる。起源はミケランジェロにあり，彼の1520年代以降の作品(サン･ロレンツォのメディチ家廟の〈昼〉，ユリウス2世廟のための〈囚人たち〉など)において，完璧な仕上げにまで至ることなく，粗彫りのままに置かれる作品のもつ精神的効果に対して，同時代人がミケランジェロの〈ノン･フィニート〉と呼んだ。
