Depopulated areas

Japanese: 過疎地域

This refers to areas designated pursuant to Article 2, Paragraph 1 of the "Special Measures Law for Promoting Independence for Depopulated Areas" (Law No. 15 of 2000) for the purpose of promoting independence in areas where the vitality of local communities has declined due to a significant decline in population and where the development of production functions and living environments is lower than in other areas, improving resident welfare, increasing employment, correcting regional disparities, and contributing to the creation of a beautiful and dignified nation.

人口の著しい減少に伴って地域社会における活力が低下し、生産機能及び生活環境の整備等が他の地域に比較して低い地域の自立促進を図り、住民福祉の向上、雇用の増大、地域格差の是正及び美しく風格ある国土の形成に寄与することを目的として、「過疎地域自立促進特別措置法」（平成12年法律第15号）第2条第1項に基づき指定されている区域をいう。
