Prefect of the Oriental Province under the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I (in office 530-541). Greek name Iōannēs. Date of birth and death unknown. Originally from Cappadocia in central Anatolia. He used his skill to collect heavy taxes and raise funds for the emperor's restoration of the Roman Empire. Although he was highly trusted by the emperor, he was the target of discontent among the citizens (such as the Nika Rebellion in 532). He was overthrown by a conspiracy by Empress Theodora, reduced to the status of a priest, and exiled to Egypt. After the death of the empress (548), he was allowed to return to the capital, but remained a priest for the rest of his life. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
