?-1257 The first sultan of the Mamluk dynasty. Reigned 1250. The only female sultan in Islamic history (her birth is unknown, but she may have been of Turkish or Armenian descent). She was a slave lady at the palace, but she won the favor of the 7th Ayyubid sultan, Saleh, and became his legal wife, giving birth to a boy (who died in infancy). Her husband died while they were moving south through the Delta region after the 7th Crusade attacked Egypt, but she concealed this and saved the country from crisis. When her son-in-law, the 8th sultan, was murdered by his father's private soldiers (a slave army known as the Bahri Mamluks), they recommended her as sultan and she ruled Egypt (for 80 days).
