Marikkan (English spelling)

Japanese: 麻立干 - まりかん（英語表記）maripkan

One of the early titles of kings in Silla, Korea. It is written in Silla Chinese characters and is interpreted as the person who sits at the top of the Hwabaek (chief council), the chief, or the head. It is considered to have been the title of kings during the process of Silla's transition from a tribal alliance to a centralized government. According to the "Samguk Yusa," it was used for about 250 years over six generations, from Namulmalipgan to Jijeongmalipgan.

朝鮮，新羅の初期王号の一つ。新羅語の漢字表記で，和白 (首長会議) で最上席につく者，長上，首などと解釈されている。新羅が部族連合から中央集権政治に移行する過程の王号とみられる。『三国遺事』によれば奈勿麻立干から智證麻立干にいたる6代 250年ほどにわたって使用されたという。
