Izusan Shrine

Japanese:
Izusan Shrine

Located in Izuyama, Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Homusubi-no-Mikoto, Izanagi-no-Mikoto, and Izanami-no-Mikoto are enshrined here as the Izuyama deities. It is said that the shrine was founded on Mt. Higane (Jikkoku Pass) during the reign of Emperor Kōshō, and was later moved to its current location. It is said that the Homusubi-no-Mikoto Shrine listed in the Engishiki is the original shrine, but since the Middle Ages it has been called Izuyama Gongen and Sotoyama Gongen. Since Minamoto no Yoritomo was deeply revered, it has also been called Nisho Gongen along with Hakone Gongen (Hakone Shrine), and was well received by the Kamakura and Muromachi Shogunates. Originally known as "Hashiriyu," it is believed that the deity was worshipped as the deity in charge of an abundant supply of hot water. It became a prefectural shrine in 1873 (Meiji 6), and a minor national shrine in 1928 (Showa 3). The annual festival is held on April 15th. Treasures include the Heart Sutra (written by Emperor Gonara), a national important cultural property, one ancient sword, and other items excavated from a sutra mound.
