Maria Ruth Incident

In July 1872 (June 5th year of the Meiji era), the Peruvian sailing ship Maria Luz, carrying Chinese workers (coolies) from Portuguese Macau, stopped in Yokohama for repairs on its way to Peru. One of the Chinese workers, unable to bear the mistreatment, escaped from the ship and was taken into custody by a British warship. The Japanese government, which received the Chinese worker from the British side, prohibited the Maria Luz from leaving port and prosecuted the captain, with Kanagawa Prefectural Governor Taku Oe finding him guilty (with a suspended sentence) of the mistreatment.

1872年7月(明治5年6月)，ペルーの帆船マリア･ルースMaria Luz号が，ポルトガル領マカオで中国人労働者(苦力（クーリー）)を乗せてペルーに向かう途中，修理のため横浜に寄港した際，同港内で，中国人労働者の一人が虐待に耐えかねて船外に逃れ，イギリス軍艦に保護された。イギリス側から同人の引渡しを受けた日本政府は，マリア･ルース号の出港を禁止するとともに，船長を訴追し，神奈川県権令大江卓は虐待行為につき有罪(執行猶予)を宣告した。
