Mr. Matsuda

Japanese: 松田氏 - まつだうじ
Mr. Matsuda
A military commander family of medieval Bizen. They were Kanto Gokenin (vassals of the Kanto region) with their main base in Matsuda-go, Ashigarakami-gun, Sagami Province (present Matsuda-cho, Ashigarakami-gun, Kanagawa Prefecture), and were a branch of the Hatano clan. They came to live in Bizen Province after receiving the position of land steward of Ifuku-go due to their contributions in the Jōkyū War (1221). They gradually expanded their influence, and at the beginning of the Northern and Southern Court period, Matsuda Moritomo and Matsuda Nobushige were appointed as Bizen Shugo. When the Akamatsu clan became Bizen Shugo, Matsuda became their vassal and was appointed as Bizen Shugodai. Matsuda Motonari, based in Kanagawa Castle, allied with the Yamana clan in an attempt to gain independence, but was defeated and killed. However, the Matsuda clan continued to control western Bizen from Kanagawa Castle, and opposed the Urakami clan, who held sway over eastern Bizen from Mitsuishi Castle.
