Maracay

The capital of Aragua state in northern Venezuela. It is located about 80 km west-southwest of the capital, Caracas, in a basin in the coastal mountains, on the northeastern shore of Lake Valencia. It is 450 m above sea level. It was the center of Venezuela's dictator J.V. Gomez's activities, and during his long presidency (1908-1935), he built a bullring, an airport, an opera house, parks, and other facilities to make the city a cultural and social center. It is currently the commercial center of the surrounding agricultural and livestock areas, distributing agricultural and livestock products, and is one of the country's major industrial centers, with industries in textiles, sugar, paper, rayon, rubber, food, and cement. The Pan-American Highway and railway pass through the city. Population: 538,616 (1990).

ベネズエラ北部，アラグア州の州都。首都カラカスの西南西約 80km，海岸山脈中の盆地にあり，バレンシア湖北東岸に位置する。標高約 450m。ベネズエラの独裁者，J.V.ゴメスが活動中心地としたところで，その長い大統領在任期間 (1908～35) 中，市を文化・社会中心地とすべく，闘牛場，空港，オペラ劇場，公園などを建設した。現在周辺の農牧地帯の商業中心地で，農畜産物を集散するほか，同国の主要工業中心地の一つとして，繊維，製糖，製紙，レーヨン，ゴム，食品，セメントなどの工業が立地する。パンアメリカン・ハイウェー，鉄道が通る。人口 53万 8616 (1990) 。
