American politician and businessman. Republican. Born in Detroit. Governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007. Born into a devout Mormon family in Detroit. His father is a businessman and governor of Michigan. After earning a degree from Harvard University and graduating with honors from both business school and law school, he worked as a business consultant. In 1984, he founded the investment company Bain Capital and developed it into one of the world's leading funds. In 1994, he ran for the Republican senate in Massachusetts, losing a close race to Democrat Edward Kennedy, but attracting attention. As chairman of the organizing committee for the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, he successfully organized the event, and his popularity and management skills led him to become the Republican candidate for governor of Massachusetts, where he was elected. In the 2008 presidential primary, he faced off against candidate McCain, but was defeated on Super Tuesday, when multiple states held primaries, and was forced to withdraw. In the 2012 presidential primary, he was in a close race with former Senator Rick Santorum, one of the leading candidates, at the beginning, but he was strongly regarded by Republican supporters as a candidate who could beat President Obama, and gradually widened the gap, winning on Super Tuesday in March, when Santorum announced his withdrawal and he was nominated as the Republican presidential candidate. However, in the presidential election, he ran against Obama on a moderate conservative platform, and at one point appeared to be closing in on Obama in the middle of the campaign, but was defeated in the November election. The Republican Party was unable to regain power. Although he was somewhat successful in attracting white voters and the wealthy, the reason for his defeat is said to be his failure to gain support from poor and non-white voters.
