A city in eastern Ehime Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1937. It faces the Hiuchi Nada Sea and stretches to the Ishizuchi Mountains to the south. The city center developed from the end of the 17th century as a copper shipping port for the Besshi Copper Mine. A Western-style smelter (later moved to Shisakajima) was established in the early Meiji period, and a fertilizer factory and a hydroelectric power plant were established in the early Taisho period, and it developed as an industrial city. It is the center of the Toyo New Industrial City, with large factories producing metals, machinery, chemicals, and other products. In recent years, there has been a shift to high-technology industries. The Besshi Line upstream of the Kokuryo River is famous for its beautiful valley. The Taiko Festival, held in October, has a 300-year tradition. The theme park Minetopia Besshi is located on the former site of the Besshi Copper Mine. The Yosan Line and Matsuyama Expressway run through the city. In April 2003, Besshiyama Village in Uma District was incorporated. Area: 234.46 km2 . Population: 121,735 (2010).
