Proconsul - Proconsul (English spelling)

A family of fossil apes. Since the 1930s, skulls, numerous teeth, jaw fragments, and limb bones have been excavated from the Miocene strata of the Tertiary Period in Kenya and Uganda in East Africa, and these are considered to be the ancestors of gorillas and chimpanzees. At the time, there was a popular chimpanzee named Consul at the London Zoo, and the genus Proconsul was named after him. These are divided into three species: P. africanus, P. nyanzae, and P. major. All of them were about the same size as modern apes, but they had weak supraorbital ridges and poor arm movements. Recently, they have been integrated into Dryopithecus, and are thought to form a subgenus within it.

化石類人猿の一族。1930年代以降、東アフリカのケニアやウガンダの第三紀中新世の地層から頭骨や多数の歯、顎骨(がくこつ)片、四肢骨が出土しているが、これらはゴリラやチンパンジーの祖先とみなされた。当時、ロンドン動物園にコンスル（領事）という名の人気者のチンパンジーがいたが、それにちなみ、プロコンスルという属名が与えられた。これらはアフリカヌスP. africanus、ニアンゼP. nyanzaeおよびマジョールP. majorの3種に分けられる。いずれも現生類人猿程度の大きさであったが、眼窩(がんか)上隆起は弱く、腕渡りも下手であったと考えられる。最近はドリオピテクスのなかに統合され、そのなかの亜属を形成するものと考えられている。
