Mayagüez (English spelling)
A city in the western part of Puerto Rico, a commonwealth of the United States, in the central West Indies. It is a port city on the Mona Strait, about 110 km west-southwest of the capital, San Juan. It was founded in 1760. It developed as the main port in the western part of the island, shipping sugar cane, coffee, tobacco, tropical fruits, and other products from the surrounding agricultural areas. It was severely damaged by the earthquake and tsunami in 1918, but has since been rebuilt. Its main industries are food, beer, furniture, sewing, tiles, soap, and tobacco, and the electronics industry has also developed in the Mayagüez Foreign Trade District. It has educational and research facilities, including the agricultural and engineering faculties of the University of Puerto Rico, and the United States Department of Agriculture Agricultural Experiment Station, one of the largest in the Western Hemisphere, which has a collection of tropical plants. Population: 103,71 (1990).
