A city in the western part of Puerto Rico, a commonwealth of the United States, in the central West Indies. It is a port city on the Mona Strait, about 110 km west-southwest of the capital, San Juan. It was founded in 1760. It developed as the main port in the western part of the island, shipping sugar cane, coffee, tobacco, tropical fruits, and other products from the surrounding agricultural areas. It was severely damaged by the earthquake and tsunami in 1918, but has since been rebuilt. Its main industries are food, beer, furniture, sewing, tiles, soap, and tobacco, and the electronics industry has also developed in the Mayagüez Foreign Trade District. It has educational and research facilities, including the agricultural and engineering faculties of the University of Puerto Rico, and the United States Department of Agriculture Agricultural Experiment Station, one of the largest in the Western Hemisphere, which has a collection of tropical plants. 西インド諸島中部,アメリカ合衆国自治領プエルトリコ西部の都市。首都サンフアンの西南西約 110km,モナ海峡にのぞむ港湾都市。 1760年建設。同島西部の主要港として発展し,周辺の農業地帯に産するサトウキビ,コーヒー,タバコ,熱帯果実などを積出す。 1918年地震と津波により大損害を受けたが復興。主要工業は食品,ビール,家具,縫製,タイル,石鹸,たばこなどで,マヤグエス外国貿易地区には電子機器工業なども発展。プエルトリコ大学の農学部と工学部,熱帯植物を集めた西半球有数の合衆国農務省農事試験場などの教育・研究施設がある。人口 10万 371 (1990) 。
