...Buffaloes, including males, have no neck fur, their heads are not particularly raised, and their body hair is sparse, with older animals being almost entirely naked. Wild species are found in the tropical regions of Africa and South Asia, and there are three genera and six species: the African buffalo (cross buffalo) Synceros caffer (illustration), the Red buffalo S. nanus (S. nanus), the Asiatic buffalo Bubalus bubalis ( B. arnee ), the Mindoran buffalo ( B. mindorensis ), the Anoa (Anoa depressicornis ) (illustration), and the Mountain anoa A. quarlesi (A. quarlesi) . The Asiatic buffalo (water buffalo) (illustration) has horns that are clearly triangular in cross section, with the bases far apart, relatively small ears with no noticeable tufts of hair on the edges, and hair on the back that runs from the lower back to the front.
