A vine of the genus Dischidia in the family Asclepiadaceae, with 70 species found in tropical Asia, Australia, etc. It is an evergreen perennial plant that grows epiphytically and has opposite, fleshy leaves. A few species have oval leaves like those of the fern Dischidia, as well as leaves that have been modified into large, fleshy water pouches that can store rainwater and absorb moisture through aerial roots. These pouch-like leaves can also serve as nests for ants. The following two species are commonly cultivated in Japanese botanical gardens.
