Zhang Hua

A Chinese writer and politician from the Western Jin Dynasty. His pen name was Maoxian. He was from Fangcheng County (Hebei Province). He became a Taichang scholar at the beginning of the Wei Dynasty, and while serving the Western Jin Dynasty, he distinguished himself in the subjugation of Wu. He rose to the position of Sikong and was made Duke of Zhuangwu Commandery, but was killed along with his family during the rebellion of King Sima Lun of Zhao. After his death, his family was killed and left with nothing but a large number of books. He was blessed with a talent for poetry and prose, and is particularly famous for his five magnificent "Love Poems" and three "Miscellaneous Poems" that sing of the love between men and women. He was also well versed in divination, magic, and the art of Taoism from a young age, and compiled stories of the world, stories of immortals, and ancient anecdotes into the 10 volumes of the "Historical History." It is doubtful whether the present text is his original work.

中国、西晋(しん)の文人、政治家。字(あざな)は茂先(もせん)。方城県（河北省）の人。魏(ぎ)の初めに太常(たいじょう)博士となり、西晋に仕えて呉(ご)の討伐に功をたて、官は司空(しくう)に至り、壮武郡公に封ぜられたが、趙王司馬倫(ちょうおうしばりん)の乱により一族とともに殺された。没後の彼の家には、おびただしい書物のほか、財産は何も残っていなかったという。詩文の才に恵まれ、男女の愛情を歌った華麗な「情詩」5首、「雑詩」3首はとくに有名である。また、若いころから、占卜(せんぼく)、術数、方士(ほうし)の術などにも精通し、天下の異聞、神仙のこと、古代の逸話などを集めて『博物志』10巻を著した。現行テキストが彼の原著かどうかは疑わしい。
