A townsman and scholar of the Sengoku period. His surname was Hayashi and his pen name was Rinntsu. He was born in Kyoto, but lived in Nara and sold manju. His ancestor was Hayashi Join, who accompanied the Zen monk Ryuzan Tokuken (1284-1358), who returned from China in the mid-14th century, and his descendants ran a manju shop for generations. Souji loved learning in addition to his work, and was known as a book collector. He wrote "The Tale of Genji: Rinntsu Sho" (54 volumes) and published the Japanese dictionary "Manjuyabon Setsuyoshu." He was so knowledgeable that he taught the monks of Nara. One of his sons was Baisen Toho, who became the chief priest of Kennin-ji Temple (Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City).
