A former town in Kamomoto County in northern Kumamoto Prefecture. It borders Fukuoka Prefecture across the Chikuhi Mountains, and National Route 3 runs through it. Most of the area is mountainous, and cedar wood is produced and sawn. Rice, watermelons, vegetables, chestnuts, and tea are also cultivated, and the town is known for its Kahoku tea. In January 2005, it was incorporated into Yamaga City along with Kikuka Town, Kamo Town, and Kao Town in Kamo County. 86.17 km2 . 5,402 people (2003). 熊本県北部,鹿本(かもと)郡の旧町。筑肥(ちくひ)山地を境に福岡県に接し,国道3号線が通じる。大部分は山地で,スギ材を産し製材を行う。米,スイカ,野菜,クリ,茶栽培も盛んで,鹿北茶の名で知られる。2005年1月鹿本郡菊鹿町,鹿本町,鹿央町と山鹿市へ編入。86.17km2。5402人(2003)。
